Experimental Realtime Forecasts

Presented by
Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms
National Weather Center
University of Oklahoma
with computing resources provided by the
National Center for Supercomputing Applications
and the
National Institute for Computational Sciences
and the
Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center
and the
OU Supercomputing Center for Education and Research

Using the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), CAPS produces daily forecasts in support of current and future research. These forecasts are designed to provide verification input to the model development effort.

News

Welcome to the CAPS ARPS user web pages.

The CAPS realtime system will be running on "autopilot" for several weeks between mid-November and mid-January.

Web product changes are complete. Included are:

o Capability of displaying and looping BIG images.
o Totally new color scheme.

WARNING - "big animation" on the forecast CONUS20 regions (85 images) or the SPV4CN/SPV4C0 regions (55 images) will use a lot of memory, as they are 1500x1500 images. They could cause some systems to get very slow or possibly lock up.

Watch for extra run with names that start with "mesoh" during hurricane season.

CAPS is located in the National Weather Center.

Daily ARPS and WRF forecasts are run on the OSCER supercomputers. Some of the jobs run are in support of LEAD - "Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery".

OU Supercomputers have routine maintenance scheduled on Wednesdays from 6am to midnight. On these days, forecasts will be cut short. Maintenance will only be as necessary during the spring experiments. LEAD10 analyses are moved to a LEAD computer system during the weekly maintenance slot. Only emergency maintenance days will occur during the spring experiments.

Bookmarking favorite images, animation loops, and multipanels is possible, though the URL's aren't obviously from the web pages. Please send email (remove underscores) to r_e_a_l_t_i_m_e_@_c_a_p_s_._o_u._e_d_u for more information.

Analysis and forecasts history files are available for ftp in both HDF4 and netCDF format. HDF4 may be discontinued in the future, however, there are no immediate plans. The data is at ftp://caps.ou.edu/pub/arpsdata. Both HDF4 and netCDF format are supported.

Hourly Analysis Regions:
CONUS20 - CONtinental U.S., 20km grid (CONUS 27km replacement).
LEAD10 - LEAD 10km analysis over the U.S., every hour.
NEUS - NorthEastern U.S. (analysis only), 9km grid.
SPMESO - Southern Plains MESOscale, 9km grid.

CONUS20 and SPMESO are ready about 30 minutes past the hour, while the the NEUS is ready about 60 minutes past the hour. LEAD10 is now ready about 20 minutes past the run hour or earlier except on supercomputer maintenance days. Run times will be quicker once the analysis runs are moved to the new ingest system, with necesary times benchmarked.

Daily Forecastion Regions:
CONUS20 - CONtinental U.S., 00Z run, 00Z NAM boundary data, 84 hours, 20km grid, ARPS and WRF

OSCER Supercomputers are a big part of the CAPS forecasts. Thanks go to the System Admins who work to keep the systems running!

We would like your feedback. Send email (remove underscores) to r_e_a_l_t_i_m_e_@_c_a_p_s_._o_u_._e_d_u. If there is a problem, we would like to know.

Thanks for visiting the CAPS ARPS user web pages.
